More than a Cow: Helping Heifer International Change the conversation around global development
For decades, Heifer International inspired donors with a simple message: “Buy a cow, change a life.” But today’s donors demand more — they want transparency, proof of impact, and a deeper connection to the communities they support. Competitors like Kiva and GiveDirectly were offering new levels of clarity, and Heifer’s digital presence wasn’t keeping up. The challenge was to transform a transactional message into a trustworthy, emotionally resonant digital experience that reflected the true scope of Heifer’s global mission.
Our strategy was to build an experience that was transparent, engaging, and deeply human, transforming Heifer’s digital presence from a transactional gift catalog into a journey of trust and connection.
Bridging the Understanding Gap
Through extensive research — reading hundreds of program documents, consulting with directors, and even traveling to Honduras to see the work firsthand — I uncovered a key insight:
Donors weren’t just giving to “buy a cow.” They wanted to know that their contributions fostered dignity, equality, and long-term growth. They needed transparency to trust Heifer’s work, and inspiration to feel personally connected to it.
This insight reframed the design challenge: close the gap between Heifer’s real impact and how it was being communicated.
Centering the Human Story
We shifted the narrative away from livestock as a commodity and placed people at the heart of the design. The new storytelling emphasized dignity, equality, and empowerment, presenting beneficiaries not as passive recipients of aid but as active participants in shaping their futures. Eye-to-eye visuals and first-person stories helped donors feel a personal connection to the communities they were supporting.
Simplifying Complexity Through Interaction
Heifer’s development model is complex, with training, education, and sustainability woven into every program. To make this understandable for a general audience, I borrowed techniques from museum exhibit design — breaking down abstract systems into clear, visual, and interactive moments. Donors could explore how livestock, training, and community development interlock to create long-term impact, making the invisible visible.
Engaging Through Playfulness
To keep the experience inviting, we designed interactive micro-moments — such as completing a goat illustration to hear it bleat. These playful touches balanced the seriousness of Heifer’s mission with moments of delight, increasing engagement while reinforcing the impact narrative.
Building Trust Through Transparency
Donors wanted to know exactly where their money went. We created an interactive world map that pinpointed project locations globally, with clickable regions that revealed program details. This gave donors a clear line of sight into Heifer’s work, establishing credibility and aligning with the modern demand for transparency.
Demonstrating Tangible Impact
Finally, we used progressive visuals to show the stages of development — from subsistence to thriving communities. This “before and after” framing allowed donors to instantly see the transformative power of their contributions, creating a powerful emotional payoff.
Impact: A New Conversation
The new Heifer.org reframed the conversation with donors. It established Heifer as a leader in transparent, emotionally engaging global development storytelling, rebuilt donor trust, and created a scalable platform for the organization’s next 70 years of work. By combining empathy with clarity, the redesign gave donors not just a reason to give, but a reason to believe.
